Iguanas, In Danger of Extinction

Locally iguanas have been hunted as a source of protein. While this is illegal there is a belief amongst local people that everyone is entitled to catch 1 a year. If hunting iguanas doesn’t stop now they will be extinct in 5 years time.

At present it is estimated that at best there are between 500 and 2000 green iguanas in the area. According to Jorge Cabrera, a biologist at the National University of Costa Rica, at least 7,600 are needed for the survival of the species.
